I was in "line-up" that evening with Dave when Captain Ford told us the regular helicopter observer had called in sick and would anyone like to volunteer to ride in "Argus" (the helicopter call sign). Dave raised his hand, as did I and one other officer. Of us three, Capt. Ford picked Dave. I was disappointed, though that was mixed with being happy for Dave as he was a friend to all and a great guy - excellent cop in all respects and a tragic loss.

Thinking about it still brings tears to my eyes.
