Constable Lee Hafer was struck and killed by a truck on Highway 52, less than one mile west of the Aberdeen line, while assisting his son, who was the Aberdeen police chief, with arresting an intoxicated man.
He was taken to a local hospital where he died the following day.
Constable Hafer's son, Chief of Police Elmer Hafer of the Aberdeen Police Department, was killed in the line of duty two years later in similar circumstances.
