Officer Carroll Hanley was killed when he was flung off the running boards of a suspect's vehicle as it sped through rush hour traffic at Twentieth Street and Hargrove Alley in Baltimore.
Officer Hanley was arresting the subject and placed him in the vehicle when the man started to drive away. Officer Hanley grabbed onto the vehicle and tried to get into the car. The driver sped down the street, weaving the vehicle in an attempt to throw him from it. While turning on Hargrove Avenue, Officer Hanley was thrown off. He was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The subject was arrested a few days later, convicted of manslaughter, and sentenced to four years.
Officer Hanley was a United States military veteran of the Spanish War and the Philippine Campaign and had served with the Baltimore City Police Department for 27 years. He was survived by his wife and five children.
