Raymond Leonard Hawkins

Officer Raymond Hawkins succumbed to gunshot wounds received two months earlier when he was shot while attempting to stop a robbery while off duty.

He was in a convenience store in Prince George's County, Maryland, when he witnessed two men robbing the store. He was able to subdue both men when an unseen third accomplice shot him from behind. He never regained consciousness and succumbed to his wounds two months later.

The three suspects escaped and were later captured in March 1972. The suspect who shot Officer Hawkins was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Officer Hawkins was a Vietnam War veteran where he served with the United States Army and had served with the United States Park Police for three years. He is buried at Cedar hill Cemetery in Suitland, Maryland.

On today, the 50th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country-not just as a Law Enforcement Officer but also when you served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam as a member of the 14th Infantry Regiment-the “Golden Dragons” which was part of the 25th “Tropic Lightning” Infantry Division. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
