Investigator William Jackson was shot and killed along Route 17 in Camden County, North Carolina, while pursuing a vehicle with suspected bootleggers.
He and a Norfolk police officer who had been detailed to the Alcohol Tax Unit had followed the car from South Mills, North Carolina, north on Route 17 toward the Virginia line. The occupants of the vehicle opened fire with a shotgun approximately three miles before the line, striking Investigator Jackson.
The pursuit continued into Virginia as the officers and suspects exchanged shots from their moving cars. The car that the officers were in was struck in the radiator and became disabled.
Both men were arrested, convicted of murder, and sentenced to life in prison.
Investigator Jackson was survived by his wife and daughter.
