Patrolman Arthur Lackey succumbed to gunshot wounds he received at 303 South Calhoun Street in Greenville.
At 2:15 a.m., Patrolman Lackey and other officers were searching for a suspect who had shot and wounded another officer earlier in the night. When Patrolman Lackey entered a dark room of the house, the suspect, who was hiding behind some drapes, fired multiple shots before escaping out the back door. One of the bullets struck Patrolman Lackey in the abdomen.
The suspect ran from the home, firing at officers, and they returned fire. The suspect died at the hospital two days later.
The other officer survived his wound and returned to work a few months later.
Patrolman Lackey was transported to the city hospital where he succumbed to his wounds a day later.
Patrolman Lackey was a United States Army WWI veteran and had served with the Greenville Police Department for two years as a motor officer. He was survived by his wife and two small children.
