Deputy Sheriff Warren LaRue and Deputy Sheriff Rex Stone were shot and killed at 5344 East Van Buren Street in Phoenix by a man as they attempted to seize his mobile home to satisfy an $833 judgment.

The man produced a gun and shot Deputy LaRue four times in the back. Deputy Stone returned fire, hitting the suspect five times as the suspect shot him three times. Both deputies and the suspect died at the scene.

Deputy Stone's son, Officer Dale Stone, a Phoenix police officer, had been killed in the line of duty just three weeks prior to this incident.

Deputy LaRue had served with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office for almost 25 years and was 59 days short of his 25-year retirement. He was survived by his wife and son.

This is the 50th anniversary of the day our family received the tragic news that you lost your life while serving as a law enforcement officer. I am writing this because of the pride I feel in calling you my uncle. My mom, Kathryn Cartier Wood, often spoke of you and through her words, I thought of you and Aunt Eve as quiet souls, kind, reserved, and dignified. Two family members that deserve to be remembered with love and respect. Thank you for your service, Uncle Warren. May you and Aunt Eve rest together in much deserved peace.
