Deputy Marshal Samuel L'Estrange was shot and killed in Webster, Florida, while serving an arrest warrant on a man for postal violations in which the suspect had sent threatening post cards to government officials in Washington, DC.
The suspect was convicted of the postal violations but not charged with Deputy Marshal L'Estrange's murder.

View all 10 ReflectionsDeputy S. LeStrange was an instrumental figure in one of the biggest stories in the county in the year of 1890. He was assigned with the task of capturing or killing the tyrannical Mayor of Cedar Key, FL , William "Billy" Cottrell. LeStrange and Captain Smythe of the USRC McLane chased Cottrell as far as they could up the Suwannee River. But due to resistance from the local residents, they were unable to apprehend William Cottrell. They did however capture 6 of his buddies who took part in the rampaging of Cedar Key.
