Deputy Sheriff James Machado was shot and killed at the intersection of Highway 49 and Elm Avenue in Auburn with his own service weapon during a struggle with a mental patient.

The subject was located a short time later, walking along I-80. As other officers approached him, he attempted to shoot them with Deputy Machado's weapon. The officers fired several shotgun rounds at the suspect, killing him.

Deputy Machado had served with the Placer County Sheriff's Office for four years. In 2008, Deputy Machado was posthumously awarded the Placer County Sheriff’s Office Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife and three children.

The Auburn intersection where he was killed was also dedicated in his honor.

My name is Diane Turrietta (Wood) I babysat for the Machado's 3 children. On July 13th Mr. Machado picked me up about 3:30pm anna I watched the kids until his wife got home from the dental office where she worked. I was at Foothill Bowl with my them boyfriend when my mom arrived to tell me the terrible news. I was 15 years old and still remember how saddened and shocking the news of Mr Machado 's death. I continued to watch his kids for several months after his passing. I love seeing his memorial at the intersection of Elm and Highway 49 every time I'm in Auburn. Rest in peace Mr. Machado, I'll always remember your sense of humor and kindness. I pray for the safety and protection for all those who serve their communities! God Bless and Merry Christmas in heaven.
