Detective Arthur Mann was shot and killed at 8th and Main Streets while attempting to arrest a man for carrying a handgun.
Another detective was shot and wounded. The suspect was wanted at the time for murdering Detective J. H. Kitchen and Detective A. M. Blair of the Greenville, South Carolina, Police Department.
After murdering Detective Mann, the suspect fled to Ohio, where he was apprehended. He was extradited to Virginia and executed for Detective Mann's murder.
Detective Mann had served with the Lynchburg Police Department for nine years and had previously served with the Lynchburg Fire Department. He was survived by his wife, two sons, a brother, and two sisters.
