Deputy Miller was shot and killed while attempting to serve a warrant on a 60 year old man two miles east of Mooresville. The suspect shot him in the chest with a shotgun when he told him he had a warrant for his arrest. A posse captured the suspect the next day.
The suspect was convicted of Deputy Miller's murder and executed in the electric chair on September 25, 1917.
Deputy Miller was survived by his wife, six children, three brothers, and four sisters.
