Sergeant Joseph Monteparo was stabbed to death while attempting to talk a man into dropping a knife.

Sergeant Monteparo was familiar with the suspect and had dealt with him on several occasions. Other officers on the scene returned fire and killed the suspect.

Sergeant Monteparo had served with the Asbury Park Police Department for 11 years. He was survived by his wife and three children.

I remember the morning when you were taken from the family. I heard the news on the radio and couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I was just 15 at the time. I wish I had more time with you, but I have fond memories of seeing you and visiting you when my Dad would take me to Asbury Park. You are my Godfather and always treated me like your own. I think of you all the time. Rest easy Uncle Joe. I will keep you in my heart always.
