Reflections for Police Officer Clinton Warren Hunter
It seems fitting that I’m sitting here reminded of you. It’s been 24 years since we decorated your house so your family wouldn’t go through Christmas without lights and a tree. Something simple so we could start to heal. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long, seems like it just happened, I can still smell the aviation fuel and still see the chaos in the ER. The memories of the drive to your house to tell your wife she’s a widow. We celebrated your life on the 20th anniversary. Your family, classmates and shift mates were there. Your family wanted to do it at the South Substation, which is now named after you. I think it was a really good moment for all of us. For most of the men and women who work there now, you’re a part of history, your story is told to them as they become part of tradition in law enforcement. For me I saw something different when I walked the hallways, something I hadn’t done since shortly after you passed. I saw a place where you lived, worked and laughed, cut up and kept me in paperwork. You’re remembered every time I see a post for ODMP. I read their story and I think of you and the others whose names are on the wall. I can see their faces, remember the laughter and as I get older it’s easier to let the tears come.

Thinking of Officer Hunter today. The police substation that is named in his honor is down the street from me. I Thank You Office Hunter for your selfless service and pray for your family today who still misses and loves you, especially around the holidays.
Thank you for serving and protecting then and now looking over South Austin from Heaven, where your substation is. You are an angel in Heaven and still on your watch, and I Thank you. God Bless you and your family now always.

Today, with the help of two strangers, we replaced the American flags surrounding Clinton's memorial site at the entrance to Union Creek and cleaned up around the site. We said a few words of appreciation for his service, saluted him, and said God speed and RIP. Several cars stopped to inquire about what was happening and we invited them to visit Clinton's site and to read the touching message in concrete at the base of the memorial, which brought tears to the eyes of all who saw it. Clinton now has 10 more people, all strangers, who appreciate him.

The driver that was convicted of hitting Officer Hunter had previously been arrested in Hays County, TX for public intoxication and apparently had a history of hitting the bottle. I recall working in Dispatch in Hays County when the driver had been arrested for the PI. When I heard that he had killed Officer Hunter I felt numb. We had him in custody for an alcohol related offense not too long before. I was glad to see he got life. You are missed brother.

I have been reflecting on the last time I spoke to Clint the day prior to his death. We worked patrol off of E. Riverside and I was one of his field training officers when he was a cadet. My last memory of him was his positive attitude and warm smile as we goodbye to one another during shift change. I saw his mother this past December at the Tree of Angels service at my church and memories of him came flooding back into my mind. He is never forgotten, but dearly missed. Continued peace and blessings to his family.

I was on the Austin PD when this happened and I never heard a negative word spoken about Clinton. He was an intelligent, funny and hard working officer that was well respected.

Clinton-
Sir, I believe I may have met your Mom today. Such a wonderful Lady. Was coming out of a store, saw the LP on the vehicle, and engaged in conversation. When she spoke of you, there was a sparkle in her eye.
You are a true Hero, Sir. May you sleep easy in God's arms, and continue to watch over all of us. Above all, I thank you.

Today is 10 years since your life was tragically cut short doing the job you loved to do. Many things have changed since that day, people you worked with have promoted, retired and some have even passed away. Every day I go to the south substation that bears your name and see your picture hanging on the wall in the hallway. Many that walk down that hall never knew you just your story and why the station is named after you. Whenever I tell the story about what happened it chokes me up and I have to stop. You were a good officer and a good man that I am proud to have worked with and whom I am happy to call a friend. This is just my small way to say you are not forgotten and never will be.
Rest in peace Clint

Officer Hunter,
I had the pleasure of spending the week with your Daughter at summer camp. I am inspired by her strength and dedication to your memory. You would be so proud of what a wonderful young woman that she is. Your family keeps you in their memory and honors your sacrifice.
May you watch over them from the comfort of Heaven, and keep them close always. God Bless you and keep you.

Clint it been 10 years since we first met, you were a rookie and I was a brand new sergeant. I can remember the the fun we had at your expense and and how well you took it, I also remember how hard you worked and how much you loved the job. I measured every rookie ever assigned to me based on you, that may have been unjust for them, but they had large shoes to fill. I turned over every personnel jacket for everyone who ever worked for me but yours. They all moved on to other assignments or promoted. You stayed with me until the day I retired, your personnel jacket sits in my safe at the house, a memory of a career cut short, a life taken too young. May you rest in peace, watch over the new ones, they have to come to this site to read about you. May they always remember you, someone I will never forget.
