Family, Friends & Fellow Officers Remember...

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Scott,

It is the middle of the summer. While it is not your birthday or yet near the 4th anniversary of you patrolling our heavens, I just wanted to send you a reminder that me and your classmate boys (Trps Mike J., Nate S. and Mike B.) have you, Melissa and Little Scott in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you again for leading by example. There is no better way for a police man to live one's life than by speaking softly and carrying a big stick. Rest easy that we are keeping your memorial manicured HIGH SPEED, LOW DRAG AND WEED FREE.

What a shame that the state of Indiana is paying to support this guy in prison. He should be six feet under. It is injustice like this which nearly makes me move from this country to a place where justice can be done apart from attorneys who don't give a rip and callous judges who should have retired long ago.

My husband was a classmate of Scott's in the academy and also a friend. I know that he thinks of him and his family when he's on the road. We are now expecting our first child and thoughts of Scott's son come to my mind. It's not fair that he will never have the chance to do things with his father. But, he will know that his father was a hero to his community and dedicated to his family. Our thoughts are with Scott's wife, son, and family. Rest in Peace Trooper Patrick.

I am a truck driver myself and I would have stopped and helped Scott if I was the truck driver who approached the scene where Scott made his last 10-41, but there was one thing I would have done, I would put my truck in gear myself when he was under my tandems and ran over the no good criminal and held him under my tires till the other troopers arrived, No death sentence is good enough for a killer, he should be placed in the roughest part of the prison and abused by the other prisoners, give him pain like he gave Trooper Scott Patricks family pain.
I did however ride by the scene after my deliveries in Illinois and didn't know what was going on till I read the paper, everyday since then I go by the scene and think about it, why this crime has to happen in the first place.
I don't know Scott personally, but I am sure he was a good man, a good Trooper, and I feel terrible for his family and his son he never met, my brother was a Michigan City Police Officer, and when he first started he had a machine gun pointed in his face, and ever since then I feared for his life, but he is retired now and I no longer have to be concerned for him.
I myself wanted to be in law enforcement but never made it that far, I tried, but failed all written tests, I applied to MCPD, but not to the state or my county, cause I hate failure, so I gave up, I go by other police cars all the time and I always say to myself I wish that were me in that car.

To the family and loved ones of Trooper Scott Alan Patrick and his fellow officers with the Indiana State Police:

On behalf of our family, on this the third anniversary of your beloved Scott's death, I want to extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Trooper Patrick died in the line of duty. His valor and courage will never be forgotten.

In reading the loving reflections left by family and friends, it is obvious that Scott was an amazing young man who touched many lives in a positive way. I can see that he is so loved and so missed by so many.

I regret that the jurors did not give Scott's family the full measure of justice that he and his family deserved.

The circumstances of his death were heart breaking and I know caused much anquish for all those affected. I am so sorry that Scott did not get to hold his son and be here to guide him into manhood, but I am sure he is watching over him and Melissa. My son was also murdered a few months before his first child was born, and I sorely grieve that my son did not get to hold his son and everytime I embrace my grandson, I silently weep that he will only know his wonderful father through memories. My heart breaks for your family in the same way.

May Scott's spirit continue to soar and his memory continue to inspire. May God hold Scott and his family in the warmest part of his heart and the most gentle part of his soul.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Scott gave to his community and the citizens of Indiana, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on December 22, 2003.

Scott's brothers in blue, brothers in arms, and his family members, and friends, were all at his graveside on 12-21-06 at 10pm, when he started his final shift in 2003. As we've done every year since his death, and will do every year, at the same time, to honor his courage, and to keep his memory alive. The faces that show up may change, and there will always be new generations of troopers that will be tought by their field training officers about Scott's sacrifice, bravery, and honor. We miss Scott, and we show up for duty every day knowing that it could be our last shift as well. And we hope that we will see Scott, if and when our final call comes.

It was three years ago today when you paid the ultimate sacrifice by answering your final call.
In May, the jury found the young man guilty of taking your life and although asked to recommend
The death penalty, instead chose a term of life in prison without parole as the penalty for his crimes.
He will have the rest of his life to think about his actions that morning, your family only has memories.

In June, your son, Isaac, celebrated his second birthday with you always there with him in spirit.
A month later, Lieutenant Gary E. Dudley, who trained you at the Indiana State Police Academy
And former Lake County Police Chief Gary L. Martin ironically became fallen officers themselves when,
In a tragic accident, they were killed while riding in a charity bicycle ride for their fallen comrades.

You will never be forgotten by those whose lives you touched, even if in some unsuspecting way.
My prayers continue to be with your wife, the son you never met, your parents, sister and brothers
And all our troopers, especially from District 13, who serve with Integrity, Service & Professionalism.

I wanted to leave a little message for you.
My son toured your station the other day with his fellow cub scouts. We were in the room with all the news paper articles about your passing. The boys asked who you were. Officer McCall told them you were his shift partner and they asked what happened to you. He told them a bad guy shot and killed you. They wanted to know if they "caught the bad guy" He told the boys yes and he would be in jail for a long long time. It just gave me chills to see all the reminders of you in the station.You are truly missed by all you touched. I feel for your famliy and your son who will never know of you, only in pictures. Keep watch over them.
I read these reflections and only wish that we could turn back time and bring back all these officers. God Bless!

I work at the prison where you killer is serving his sentence. I saw him the other day when he was on his way to chow and it made me think of you and how your little son will never have his daddy around to hold him, to toss the ball around in the yard, to teach him how to drive, and to kick him in the seat of the pants when he needs it. It was Christmas break when this occurred. I heard about it on the news. I am in the same class as his younger brother and younger cousin. I watched his younger brother and two cousins run down state road 10 to 49. We were let outside to cheer them on. Our little community can pull together when necessary and everyone is still here for you today!!!! Keep rockin' on!!! You guys have always been awesome!!!
