I do not have to have known him to feel some of the grief, for he was a young man sworn to ensure that my life would be safer. He was a representative of the sense of order within me; he was representative of the higher laws of civilization within all of us. He was the son, grandson, brother, husband, father, friend, neighbor, and stranger whose uniform and oath made him a friend to call on when in need. Although I did not personally know him I will not miss him in a symbolic way, for his loss is palpable and poignant and personal. I pray for his family, friends, and for the community; I pray for all of us who suffer this loss.
