Although I did not know Kelly that well, he was always the first deputy to respond to cover. The few times we did talk he was funny, genuine and real. My heart goes out to his wife, children, family, friends and all law enforcement officers.

I worked with Kelly, as a dispatcher, when he first started as a Reserve for Polk County, and while working in Corrections in Polk County, and when he so joyfully went on the road as a Polk County Deputy. His dream was to be an officer. He was one of "my kids". He was such a pleasure to work with. Always very pleasant, and always very appreciative of anything I ever did for him.
Kelly, in my eyes you died a hero, doing what you loved.
Thank you...Sue

"Policeman's Prayer"

When I start my tour of duty God,
Wherever crime may be,
as I walk the darkened streets alone,
Let me be close to thee.

Please give me understanding with both the young and old.
Let me listen with attention until their story's told.
Let me never make a judgment in a rash or callous way,
but let me hold my patience let each man have his say.

Lord if some dark and dreary night,
I must give my life,
Lord, with your everlasting love
protect my children and my wife.
