Reflections for Lieutenant Roger Peck Fleming

MacKenzie...How are you? I pray that all is well with you. I have thought about you for the last few weeks and thought that I should let you know that I thought of you. You and your mom are always in my prayers. Keep your head up and much love to you. Your sister in blue...

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

This is the begining of police week 2007. It has now been 14 years since Rogers passing. Everyday I see him in my daughters face. Her beautiful face just like her fathers. His spirit lives in this wonderful child and I know he looks over his children everyday. Mackenzie will alway have her police family to remind her of how great a man and police officer her father was. Time is a gift! Use it wisely and give love everyday. Patti

MacKenzie...thought about your dad today and of course, my thoughts turned to you. I pray that all is well with you and that you have a smile on your face. I am still praying with and for you. Stay strong, be encouraged and may the sun shine your way each and every day. Much love to you from a big sister in blue.

MacKenzie...You were on my mind and I wanted to let you know that you are still in my prayers. I still think of you and the ultimate sacrifice that your father made. I still think of his beautiful little girl growing into a young woman under the watchful gaze of her special guardian angel. I do hope that all is well with you and your mother. I have not forgotten...I will never forget. And even if we never meet, know that you have a friend in me. Your "big sister" in blue.

When Roger first graduated from the Prince Georges County Police Department Academy, we saw each other at a family get-together at Uncle Buster's house (Roger's dad). I was about 13-14 years old. Roger took me for a brief drive in his new cruiser through a couple of blocks of rural streets nearby and showed me how the sirens and lights worked and when to use them (a pretty-cool thrill for an obnoxious teenager like me). He described what a great feeling it was to be a police officer. He told me that most problems can be solved if you just treat people right. He said that it was a little difficult at times, but he felt like Superman when he could help somebody. I regret that I never had a chance to tell him that I remember that. I know that he now knows.

Mackenzie...I wish that I had a magic wand that could take your pain away. I wish I had the answers to your questions and God knows that I wish that you could speak to your dad. I offer you my prayers and encouragement. And you are right about the blaming part. You know, sometimes life is very ugly to us for an unknown reason and it takes everything that we have just to get by. We want to yell and scream at God "WHY???" We want answers and understanding. We want the hurt to end. And we don't want to hear "time will heal all wounds." But know that your strength comes from God and the love of your mom. It's okay to cry and it's okay to be angry but do not allow that anger to cloud your memories of your dad...even if those memories have been given to you from family and friends. Your dad's spirit lives on not only through the stories that you hear from your mom & family, but also through you. You may not have him here physically, but he is your guardian angel who faithfully watches over you. Each time that you feel a gentle breeze brush your cheek, those are daddy kisses letting you know how much he loves you. Please know that you do have an extended family in the PGPD and you & your dad have not been forgotten.

This is Mackenzie Fleming and I am Roger Fleming's youngest daughter. I am 14 and it has been a couple years since my Dad's death. I have heard he was a wonderful man, but if only i could have had the chance to find it out for myself. I have heard i get my looks from him. If only i could see it. I heard I am a lot like him. If only I could ask him how. Ever since I was little I have been left with the question, If God is is so great why does he take good people away. Now that I am older i realized he needs certain people and un luckily my dad was one of those people. I understand that it was his time to go but what i don't understand is why me and my family still grieve. I am not the one to blame those people in the car, and I have been taught that blaming people is not the answer. Also being mad at people wont bring your loved one back. I want to tell everyone that even know you lose someone near an dear to you, it is ok to cry. Remebering is the key answer. To always know that they are watching over you and protecting you as a guardian angel. Ever since I could comprehend what had happened to my father I still have those moments where i need a good cry and my mom has always been there for me telling me It will be ok. Finally i would just like to say that I will love you know matter what Roger even thought we didnt't have much time to spend together

Your loving daughter,
Mackenzie Fleming

11 years have passed and you are not forgotten brother. A hero never is. Thank you for your service to our country and to mankind. I rather be a door keeper at the house of the Lord than to dwell in tents amongst wickedness. Thank you LT., I hope your family found the strength needed and that they realized God needed a special warrior.
